Discussion Prompts

As we are wrapping up our studies on Relationship Goals we will focus this week on the sacrifices that a relationship sometimes requires. Before Pastor Corby moved to the key truth of this sermons message, his story about the masonry plumb line showed us the importance of being vertically aligned. His key truth is then mentioned as follows:
In relationships, we need to establish vertical alignment to ensure horizontal integrity.
Of course, the vertical relationship is our relationship with God. Using the analogy of the plumb line again Corby pointed us to the cornerstone on which the plumb line is fastened. In our life, this cornerstone is Jesus Christ. In other words, if we are right in our relationship with Christ we will have a life well aligned. But how is your vertical relationship with God really? And how can it improve?
Here are two suggestions:
  1. Read Romans 5:1-5 and jot down how you understand of the words in the text. Words like: justified through faith, gained access, grace, suffering, perseverance, character, hope.
  2. Now read 2 Peter 1:5-8. If you could add a rating to each key word mentioned in this text (faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love), what would be the level of maturity these words would get in your own live? How can this improve?
I am convinced that pondering these two texts will improve your vertical relationship. Now, out of this vertical relationship can – and will – come a horizontal integrity that displays love, care, healthy boundaries, a commitment to each other, and all the things that we have talked about in the last couple of weeks. With  this in mind lets have a look at these two questions:
  1. How is your horizontal relationship with others currently? Where do you find yourself in need of improvement in one of these relationships?
  2. How can especially your vertical relationship help you with your horizontal relationship? How does being redeemed make a difference in your relationship with others?
I challenge you to write down the answers to these questions. We tend to forget what we just said what we would be doing. A pen and paper can help us in living in this vertical integrity.
Remember:
In relationships, we need to establish vertical alignment to ensure horizontal integrity.
May God bless you!
