We are wrapping up the book which James wrote to the believers of his time, and we can see that Prayer is a key part of a Faith that Works. In his sermon pastor Bryce challenged us to pray for each other and to pray with each other.
But he also mentioned a few key factors that should shape our time with God. Taking these three elements, look now at your prayer life. These three elements might just bring your corporate and your personal prayers to the next level:
1. Practice what Jesus preached
In John 17 we see one of Jesus’ most intimate conversation with his Father. Read the entire chapter of John 17 again and reflect on it. What are Jesus’ requests? What is Jesus concerned about? And in what way does he present these things to the most holy and powerful being of the universe? Ultimately, what can you learn from the relationship Jesus has with his Father?
2. Pray like Jesus’ promises are real
Jesus and other characters of the Bible repeat God’s promises back to God, not because God might have forgotten, but because we might ourselves forget the promises of God. – In your situation, what promise of God, what bible verse comes to mind? Don’t just think about it, write down what come to mind. Now, pray these promises back to God. Be reminded of His presence, His provision, His guidance, His power,… (Read also Psalm 119:148-149)
3. Persevere with great Patience
James uses the persistent prayer of Elijah to make his point. Seven times the servant had to go up to look at the clouds. And in Joshua 6 the Israelites had to go around Jericho seven times. – Which request have you brought to God only once and then given up because no answer came? If the prayer is within God’s revealed will, maybe it is time to pick up that prayer again. For the next seven days, present that prayer to God and see what happens. The answer might still be “NO”, but your might have just become closer with God.
