Discussion Prompts

Joseph has always been a man who’s life intrigued me. As the earthly father of Jesus Christ, he was remarkably well connected with God. From what we know, he listened to the angel three times, without hesitation or arguing. He just did what he was told to do.
Was it because he had no other choice? Was it because he loves Mary so much? Or was it because he knew God to be true and trustworthy?
For hundreds of years the Jewish people had heard the old prophesies from Isaiah that on day this Messiah would come. And they knew that he would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
Did Joseph just simply put one and one together and knew that this baby, the one that he was holding and caring for, was all that? Everything that was promised through Isaiah? How about changing up the song: “Mary, did you know?”. What if we would sing: “Joseph, did you know?” Did he just trust the promises about this baby boy, and it gave him strength and confidence to act upon God’s word?
What about you? What do these words from Isaiah instill in you? Do they make you trust God more? Have confidence in his word?

For today’s task, place a definition beside each one of these names of God. A definition that reflects how knowing these names to be true for God make you more confident in HIS leading:

  • Wonderful Counselor
  • Mighty God
  • Everlasting Father
  • Prince of Peace
Look at your definitions. Isn’t it wonderful to know God my the names? Knowing that he is what these words entail?
I want to encourage you to share these definitions you have put down. Share them with the ones that are in the same room as you. Share them with your family members, when you connect through FaceTime or Zoom with them this week. Share them with your neighbors when you wish each other a Merry Christmas. Because it is indeed a merry Christmas if we learn to focus on the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.
Merry Christmas to you all and God’s rich blessings to you!
