Study Guide:

With the help of Pastor Corby’s sermon, we dug deeper yet into the practical teachings of the Book of James. After learning that Satan tries to lure us into sinful behavior, and the challenge to LIVE according to God’s will, James challenges us now to be very mindful about our words.

The four areas that Pastor Corby mentioned in his sermon are listed below. Each one can be put into practice very specifically. Look at each area, answer the questions, and then go and do what God prompts you to do.

The Gospel changes us

Go through your Social Media accounts and eliminate any negative talk. Unfollow if necessary. Even unfriend. And most of all, clean up your own Social Media profile. Go back through some of your posts and clean up the hurtful and dirty things you have posted.

Stay on Mission

Before school is out next week, plan one or two practical things where you can be on a mission for God. Who needs help that you can provide? Who needs a visit and/or a conversation? How can you -practically- be a blessing to an orphan, a widow, the underdog, the homeless, a lonely person, a sick person,…? – As a group, hold each other accountable.

Talk less, bless more

In this coming week, make it a point to purposefully BLESS at least 3 people. Think of nice words to say. Think of an action that blesses others. How can you bless three people in your surrounding? Do it for the next 7 days, planned and with purpose. Do more days if you can.

Words speak life

Take a pen and paper (or a nice card) and write a letter to someone. We all know at least one person who probably has a tough day, week, month, or season of life. Write to that person. Include an encouraging Bible verse. Ask God to give you the right verse. And do send it as a letter, not as an email. Send a handwritten personal note.

James challenges us to be slow to speak, but when we speak, let our words be a blessing.

Through the Bible in one Year

Join us in reading through the entire Bible in one year. Each day of this plan guides you through passages from both the Old and New Testaments, allowing you to see connections between the history of our faith, and the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. Readings average four chapters in length, so it is posible to do. When you use the YouVersion Bible App, you can even have the app read the Bible text to you – very useful when you are in the car or otherwise occupied with your hand.

All you need to do is click the link to the Bible Plan, which should lead you straight to the Bible app. Your two options are now (1) to read the plan on your own, one day at the time. Or (2) you can make it more fun and rewarding, by sharing the plan with one or more friends, and then even “Talk about it”.
